Eleven years ago in Rio, this year in Las Vegas – Sergio “Kun” Agüero failed to lead Argentina to the World Cup title. The World Cup of Vegas—the poker players’ World Cup—reserves a specific date within the World Series of Poker (WSOP) time, as has become customary.
Players compete on the artificial grass at the Las Vegas Sports Park in addition to felt card game tables at the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP), the 56th edition of the internationally recognized World Series of Poker, an annual festival of poker tournaments held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Every year, the World Cup of Vegas is held there as well. Many famous poker players compete under their national flag in this classic football competition.
However, Argentina’s fielding of Sergio Agüero (37), a former Manchester City footballer, was a unique highlight this year.
The other participants had a terrific time because of Agüero’s unexpected appearance. He was the evening’s major star, but he was also the unfortunate one in the end. First, as retaliation for the country’s defeat in the 2014 FIFA World Cup final against the German football national team in Rio de Janeiro, the renowned striker (385 goals in 685 games) blasted Argentina into the final with his goals, defeating Germany in the semifinals.
The major drama followed. The game had to go to a penalty shootout against Spain in the final. Agüero rushed to the penalty spot after both teams had missed a single opportunity. The superstar attempted to put the ball into the right corner, but the Spanish goalie saw it coming and rejected “Kun’s” attempt. It was the Iberians’ triumph.
Why Is Former Football Star From Argentina in “Sin City” at All?
The truth is that Agüero’s ability to play at all is uncertain given his past. His career ended abruptly in 2021 after he moved from Manchester City to Barcelona. He was forced to hang up his boots right away due to a heart arrhythmia. He still appears to be able to play some indoor football, though.
What’s the reason for the Argentinian’s presence in “Sin City”?
Since retiring, Agüero, a talented poker player, has made more appearances at important poker events. He played in the World Series of Poker in Vegas last year and in the Bahamas two years ago. The Main Event is his main goal. Two years ago, he reached Day 3, earning US$50,000 and finishing 19th.
